Bipartisan Support Is A Win For Small Business

One of the first big changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was voted on last week and passed. The bill was approved in both the House and the Senate eliminating a provision in the law that would have imposed costly requirements on businesses with 51 to 100 employees. The bill was signed into law by the President yesterday. This is great news for the bill that had bipartisan support and is a win for small businesses. The ACA has already made it hard on small businesses and if the definition of a small business had been redefined to include those …

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

If you haven’t already seen the pink ribbons starting to flutter around you then you probably will at some point this month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and most people know somebody going through this battle as we speak. According to the American Cancer Society a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. Although, the death rate for breast cancer is down 34% since 1990. The high number of diagnosis push for early detection and screenings that allow medical professionals to target the disease in the beginning before it is too late. This …

Colorado Health Op In Jeopardy

Just a few days after it looked like Colorado Health Op was in the clear and moving ahead with a bright future news broke that stated the opposite. The problem with this potential closing isn’t due to the cooperative being managed wrong. This is due entirely to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) not upholding their end of the law. When the healthcare cooperatives were created there were three plans that gave the cooperative money to help them on their feet and make their way into a very competitive healthcare market. One of those plans is called the “risk corridor” and …

A Health Co-Op Doing It Right

With news revolving around health co-ops that are closing their doors at the end of this year it’s nice to hear about one that are confident about keeping their doors open. U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner asked, “Has Colorado HealthOp been meeting its application projections, or has it been placed on boosted oversight by your agency?” A rather poignant questions, but one that has to be asked as yet another co-op in New York is ordered to stop writing new business and close its doors after current policies expire. A nice reprieve to the constant news of co-ops closing was Colorado HealthOp’s …

Willing to Spend on Fitness?

The health and wellness industry seems to be booming or perhaps it’s just that I follow the industry closer than I have in the past. I don’t think that’s it though. The age of your at home fitness video’s isn’t cutting it anymore, sorry Jane Fonda. An article on Mind Body Green states that an all-inclusive gym membership doesn’t even satisfy consumers.  Sure you might be able to go to a class that interests you, but I have found that the all-inclusive gyms don’t have the best instructors. Individuals are choosing boutique type workout facilities that cater to their exact workout preference. Many …

Regulating Small Business

It’s no secret that small business and entrepreneurship isn’t as easy of a task as it used to be. Now regulations and guidelines keep the “American Dream” under wraps. There was a time when anyone that had an idea could open a shop and peddle their wares and services, but now licenses and permits are required.  There was an article posted on Forbes not too long ago that states President Obama saying, “In fact, I’ve approved fewer regulations in the first three years of my presidency than my Republican predecessor did in his.” Well thank you for approving less, but …
